The Aesthete's Alphabet - S is for Stone

This alphabet series I began some time ago has given me many sleepless nights! I used to think I was quite a decisive person, but I go to bed thinking that I will do a post on "S is for Subtle", then I change my mind and decide to do "S is for Shutters", and I plan the whole post in my head, then a few hours later I am convinced I should do "S is for Simplicity" and have to start from scratch. By early morning I have decided "S is for Silver" is definitely the way to go! At some stage I just have to settle for something and go for it....so "S is for Stone" it is going to be. I'm looking quite forward to X, Y and Z. Limited choice can be a good thing!

You might think that stone walls or floors could make a home feel cold and austere, but I think it has completely the opposite effect. The use of natural stone creates an earthy, rustic feel that makes a home inviting and livable. It can complement a range of decor styles, is durable and low maintenance and has excellent sound absorption properties. Here are some lovely examples of stone used both inside and outside. Maybe your heart will also turn to stone :).

Stay tuned for "T is for....." and I hope you appreciate the sleepless nights that are involved in bringing these blog posts to you.

Till next time

The Aesthete's Alphabet - R is for Rustic

We had a fantastic holiday...thanks for all your good wishes. We saw not one, not two, but three of those elusive leopard which was a real treat, except for my husband who offered the boys a R200 reward for leopard sightings, so he's now a bit out of pocket. But now back to reality, school lifts, work, homework, school lunches and computer problems (I know hate is a strong word, but I think I hate Windows 8!).

On to today's post....I enjoy comfort and luxury as much as the next person, but I can't get away from the fact that I have a real predilection for all things rustic. I am not a fan of top to bottom rusticity, but something rustic alongside something refined is usually a winning combination for me.

I wish you all a wonderful week ahead while I ponder what to post for S is for......

Till next time

A Bush Break

We leave to go on holiday tomorrow so my alphabet series is temporarily on hold. Instead, I am hoping to see some of these.....

and these....

and these....

and these....

These too....can you tell I'm a real sucker for the babies.

We would be very lucky to see one of these elusive creatures....

Picnicking like this would be nice....but it's more likely sandwiches in the car so we don't get eaten by lion!

And since this is essentially a decor blog, some safari style decor seemed appropriate....

So why not pack your Ralph Lauren gear into your Louis Vuitton trunk and head on over to Africa? I'll be waiting for you.

The Aesthete's Alphabet will resume soon with R is for......???

Till next time
